Foreign firms are eyeing Indian law graduates
and the pool of talent more than ever before. Company laws are not all that different
between countries. Also, international transactions are uniform throughout the
world...

Servicing
the Legal Profession
Let's start with law firms themselves. Former practitioners
happily serve as firm managers or administrators, or as
directors of practice development, client services, professional
development and associate recruiting. You can also work for one of the thousands of
service providers to the profession, many of which were founded by
former practicing lawyers. Any edition of a Law Journal will
offer dozens of examples:
computer software vendors, contract lawyer placement agencies, litigation management and legal
research services, and jury, marketing or management
consultants.
Legal Publishing. And don't forget the publishers of legal
books, magazines, newsletters and newspapers, as well as the
increasing number of online services. All of them hire law
school graduates in departments as diverse as editorial, sales,
management, acquisitions and training.
Regulation or Enforcement Specialist. In general, corporations
and government agencies are interested in lawyers with
knowledge relevant to compliance and enforcement functions.
Examples include affirmative action, the environment,
employee benefits, internal ethics, labor relations and
legislative or community affairs. |

Recruitment
One
option available to the USL graduate would be to
find employment with a suitable organization. USL
aims to organize campus recruitments at the end of
the sessions with leading law firms and legal
recruiters of the country. Any student who desires
to sit for recruitment can do so. Recruiters would
include top corporate houses & law firms from
India & abroad. It is estimated that these jobs
would include positions as legal advisers to corporate
and practicing members of law firms. With the
opening up of the service sector in compliance with
WTO norms, this recruitment process should see a
huge influx of foreign names in the near future.
Practice
The next most
popular option for the law graduate is to practice.
Practice has its pros & cons. The lure of
instant cash in the form of a fat pay packet may be
missing, but the long-term prospects are much
brighter as a practicing lawyer. Students generally
start out with law firms and once they get a firm
grounding, venture out on their own or set up their
own firms. This is not restricted to India.
Further Studies
A USL graduate
can also opt to study further after their stint at
USL. They may even opt to continue their education
in India or abroad. IIMs are a favorite destination
for such students.

Educational Administration. Most law schools these days
prefer to hire law school graduates for positions in career
services, alumni relations, and fund-raising.
Nonprofit Management. Every bar association provides
opportunities for law school graduates to manage or supervise
operations. Lawyers frequently handle discipline, attorney
assistance, mentoring, public affairs and lobbying functions.
Nonprofit organizations outside the legal profession often look
to their volunteers, many of whom are lawyers, to fill new
positions as directors or project managers, or specialists in
development or planned giving. |
